Report for Packaging!
To me, I find this packaging assignment really… tight; Time management wise. It was hard because I have to sit down and re-plan my time on many occasions. This entire month was a mess of clashes. From this assignments, to intensive rehearsals starting from 6 to 11, to switching of president in my CCA and of course, my personal life. If everything was to happen according to my plans, I would not be spending my weekends doing this assignment. But as it always is, Life will never follow your plans. Your plans will have to catch up to life. How was I supposed to know that rehearsal timings would extend from 9 to 11 and three times a week now? How was I to know that my fiancé felt left out due to my time spent on assignments, rehearsals and of course, sleep? But thank god, I was prepared. I started early, worked fast and my computer was behaving.
Illustrative wise, I opened my eyes wider, so to speak. I sat down with Sawanee and she told me that while she heard I’m more idea/concept prone, I tend to lose out when it comes to visual design. She also told me that whenever I consulted her, my speech was all concept based, she wanted to hear more visual. So she sat down with me to discuss visuals of other packaging. She asked me which sort of design I liked, and this is what I picked out:
So I drew inspiration from these two to come up with my designs. The first design I came up with received many different comments: 1. Looks chocolate-ty. 2. Looks like a condom packet. 3. Looks like sanitary Pad.
Disgusted, I tried again. Comments: Logo of brand looks out of place. 2. Looks like a light snack. 3. Font needs to change. I was getting closer. But I was not satisfied.
The third design was much closer to what I wished to express. So I did a few minor adjustments based on “WHY CAN’T IT…?” questions I asked myself. Sample: “Why can’t the packaging be portrait, why is it always landscape?” and “Why must the main visual be in the center? Why can’t it be positioned slightly lower?” Thus, I got my new and improved design.
The colours I used are all 80% girly and 20% masculine. As my TA are female, I had to use colours that appeal to them. But a design that compromises of all pink and white will be too… overbearing? So I must throw in some colours that are more masculine and darker, like maroon and grey. I tried to avoid black in my entire design as I feel that the contrast will be too great and this product is supposed to be something light for the girls to snack on, thus helping them during diets.
The visuals I used are mainly Lines, vertical, and a main graphic of berries. The main purpose of the berries is to 1. Tell my consumers that this product is berry flavoured. 2. Look yummy and healthy. The lines I used are feminine and vertical. Vertical; because all women wants to look tall and slim, not fat and short, as would happen if I turned the lines horizontal. Thus by playing with my line direction, my TA are more likely to find my product more pleasing. My front visuals were not placed in the centre simply because I was sick of seeing the standard template on granola bars, so I decided to shit it down, giving it a lengthier feel, and more room for my TA to breathe.
The information I had to put into the design was cut down a lot as compared to the original packaging. I only placed the necessary, and discard the unnecessary. The information at the back were crucial, so they stayed, while the front texts were just plain annoying, so I cut them down, and gave my TA some room to breathe as well.
My secondary packaging was very well thought of because I thought we had to do a mockup for that as well. Which I found out on Tuesday that we did not have to… Relieve and heartache at the same time. This is the original design I came up with (see inside CD, cant place save in JPEG, don’t know why.) But I quickly discarded it. It looked… bad, not what I had in mind at all. This was when I started to work backwards instead. And I came up with this:
Moving on to Maya, it was much simpler then my previous assignment which I had to model a car. After modeling the bar, I projected my image on it, rendered it and done. I think I now have a much much better control over my maya skills now as I actually know what I’m doing and not just following the lecturer blindly. Haha.
Above is a progree shot. The completed shots are on the mounting board. =)

Some professional did this on maya. My inspiration… though mine is nowhere near. This is the original packaging. I did submit my original product, but you just cant see it. Because it’s encased within my mockup… =( so sorry. I’ll buy another one soon.
This was when I found out that “Binge buster” wasn’t their official tagline. It’s the tagline of one of their line of products.
